FAQ

Daniel

When you see an animal on the street that you would like to help, YOU can be their savior! There are an estimated 200,000 stray dogs and 1 million stray cats on the streets and beaches of Puerto Rico who need the help of the entire community. We have limited space in our shelter so we will not always be able to help you directly, but we will gladly provide you with as many resources as possible to become a rescuer yourself!

Please read our Frequently Asked Questions before contacting us:

I rescued a stray dog, but I cannot take care of it. Can you help?

We have limited time, resources, and funding for the many animals we help each year. Depending on the situation, it is more likely than not that we will not be able to help, but you can contact the Shelter Director by text message (787-313-5653) or email (adri@amigosdelosanimalespr.org).

Otherwise, you can get the dog a forever home yourself! There are numerous Facebook community groups dedicated to finding rescues forever homes. You can also post him or her to our Facebook group. Good, fun pictures make all the difference in the world, so get creative with your rescue!

Jumanji
I have a pet dog that I can no longer keep. Can you help?

We have limited time, resources, and funding for the many animals we help each year. We also strongly discourage surrendering your animals regardless of your situation. Shelters and rescues are already overrun with animals rescued from the street and are hard-pressed for space as well as the tools needed to get them adopted into good homes. If you want to ensure the health and safety of your own pet, it is best you make the arrangements you have to in order to keep your pet. Therefore, it is more likely than not that we will not be able to help, but you can contact the Shelter Director by text message (787-313-5653) or email (adri@amigosdelosanimalespr.org).

If you really cannot keep your pet, you can also try to get him or her adopted yourself. There are numerous Facebook community groups dedicated to finding rescues forever homes. You can also post him or her to our Facebook group.

Do you rescue cats?

At this moment we do not have the resources to rescue or rehome cats. However, we love cats and suggest any of these resources to find them a home.

Zero in Crate
I am a tourist who rescued a dog or cat and would like to make arrangements to take it home, or have my new pet sent home on a later flight. Can you help?

Amigos de los Animales often works with tourists interested in taking stray animals home. Because Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States, animal travel from Puerto Rico to the continental U.S. is considered State to State travel. All that is needed is a travel certificate and flight costs in order to take your new pet home. Even if you are flying outside the U.S. we will go out of our way to give you assistance to take home your new best friend forever. If this is your situation, please contact the Shelter Director by text at 787-313-5653 or by email at adri@amigosdelosanimalespr.org.

Are there other veterinarians, shelters or rescues that can help me in saving an animal?

I believe someone is abusing or neglecting an animal. What can I do?

It is a crime to abuse or neglect the basic needs of an animal, even if the abuser is the animal’s owner. Our organization cannot carry out investigations of animal abuse but we can give you advice on how to bring a case or complaint to the correct authorities. Our Shelter Director Adri Galler is a certified Animal Control Officer/Cruelty Investigator and can be reached at 787-313-5653. It is important that you act immediately if you suspect abuse. A list of police coordinators dedicated to cases of animal abuse can be found here.

Thank you! If you have any questions not answered here, please contact us at info@amigosdelosanimalespr.org.
